When I think of power, the word that comes to mind is necessity. Without power, you can’t possibly achieve the things that you want to, whether for good or bad. If you are in a vacuum that doesn’t allow you to have influence on your wider society, then you can’t achieve much.
I think the most important person that I admired in South Australian history was Don Dunstan. He came upon the scene as a young lawyer, and while certainly, he had his own advantages and privileges, he was a most brilliant man who brought the modern world, and modern ideas, to South Australia at a time when the state had become stuck in its previous paradigm.
