John Doherty

Educator/Creative Artist

The influence of others has been a very powerful force in shaping my life. Mentors like Helmut Bakaitis, who was the founder of the long-defunct Saturday Company (a youth based theatre group based in Carclew) and Frank Ford, the founding chair of the Adelaide Fringe, were both powerful arts leaders. In turn, my own experience of teaching, and learning from, my students has been profoundly powerful in my life.

Theo Maras has been profoundly influential in his vision for what Adelaide and South Australia could be in the face of many nay-sayers and doubters. I share his vision that South Australia could become a powerhouse of the performing arts; television and theatre in particular. This hinges on the desperate need to retain young talent.
