Novelist
In my personal story, I see a connection between power and storytelling. I feel that I have been empowered by the stories of others, familial and otherwise, by language, and by how others have facilitated storytelling in my life. Libba Bray once said that ‘There is no greater power on this earth than story’. It’s a quote that hangs beside my computer, and as a novelist, that statement acts as both encouragement and warning to me.
It reminds me of the fundamental need we all have for story, and the importance of representation, of truth, of many stories. It is important to question power, and so it is important to question the stories we receive. We must celebrate and interrogate them.
