Power has been an important part of the journey that I’ve been on. As a child of the Stolen Generation, my mother was disempowered, however she gave to her children, myself and my sister, the sense of power that we can take control over our own lives. She gave us a great capacity to empathise with others who have been disempowered, and to help them claim it back.

When I think about power, it’s twofold. There’s the abuse of power, which disempowers others. But of course power is used in a positive way to correct injustices, and as the opponent of manipulation and dishonesty. Everyone has power to some degree, and it’s really up to us how we use it.
