Workers at Martin's Quarry c. 1890, State Library of South Australia.

Join us at Willunga’s only working slate quarry. Slate was discovered by settlers in 1840 and during the nineteenth century a vigorous industry developed. Willunga was the only area in Australia that produced roofing slates, which were exported to other colonies. How was Willunga slate quarried? Come to the heritage-listed Willunga Slate Quarry to find out. Hear the stories of this fascinating time. Please note: stout closed walking shoes are required.
