The House of History: A Brief History of the Historical Society of SA

Presented by: Robert Martin

The Historical Society of South Australia recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. South Australia was the last state to set up such a body, but the HSSA has a proud record: organising monthly lectures, bi-monthly newsletters, annual journals, frequent excursions, and other activities, nearly all of this the work of volunteers. Highlights included helping to prepare the State’s Sesquicentenary in 1986. This presentation gives a brief account of the Society’s achievements, touching on some notable figures in the membership. It ends with the current difficulties of the organisation, such as declining membership and volunteering, a situation shared with many other organisations, but detailing optimistic plans for the future.
