Wonder of Life: Goldmining in the 1800s

Goldmining in the late 1800s was a harsh and dangerous environment. On May 21st join a guided walk along the Victoria Hill Hike which will make you wonder how the miners survived. See the ground they had to dig in with just a pick and shovel. Hear how larger companies struggled to make a profit but failed.

The display tool shed will give you an idea of the tools and equipment used in the 1800s and 1900s. Learn how they made do with what was on hand. e.g. kerosene tins. Wonder what that machine is in the corner?

Try your hand at gold panning. Find out how long it took to get a tiny piece of gold, if you were lucky! How much patience do you have?

Any Tuesday morning visit Bowden’s Cottage and wonder at how a teenage girl did all the heavy work to help construct the original Cottage.
