Women of Substance and Paradise of Dissent: Author Talk

After Colonel Light had completed the first survey of the City of Adelaide in 1837 he was left with six squares and 52 streets. All but one of the streets were named after men and only one of the Squares after a woman. However, despite the male dominance, there were some surprisingly accomplished women standing behind these men and this presentation is about their influence and their personal achievements during a time when women were largely expected to be seen and not heard. This discrimination overlooked some powerful feminine intellects and led Dr Jeff Nicholas to seek more information. So it is his privilege to introduce three Harriets who take centre stage with a Priscilla, a Maria, a Lady Jane, and an Elizabeth, each who formed a powerful coterie of great intellectual power.
