Who are the People of Adelaide: Author Talk With Dr Jeff Nicholas

Grote, Angas, Wakefield, Flinders, Gouger and Light are just some of the well known streets and squares in the City of Adelaide.

The personal stories of how these and other British Political Reformers came to be immortalised in Adelaide’s Street names has been largely overlooked since Europeans first settled in Adelaide in 1836. This lecture reveals who they were, what drove them and how they came to be commemorated here.

As the author of a three volume book about these early settlers, Dr Jeff Nicholas believes that they constitute what he might call a ‘pantheon of dissent’. In the book set which is entitled Behind the Streets of Adelaide he pays tribute to all 58 people named in central Adelaide and on the northern side of the River Torrens.
