Visit Wheal Watkins, Glen Osmond, part of Australia’s first metalliferous mining area. This above-ground tour of a historic 178-year-old silver-lead mine site is a general introduction to the origins of Cornish mining in South Australia. Wheal Watkins and other Glen Osmond mines were worked in the 1840s and were the forerunners of a mining industry, later based on copper, that transformed the economy of South Australia from depression to rapid growth and prosperity. Sturdy footwear and moderate degree of mobility are required. Children welcome (free). Arrive 15 minutes before your tour time. Please phone if cancelling. Bookings required by phone or email.
