Bishop Augustus Short laid the foundation stone of St Peter’s Cathedral on, appropriately, St Peter’s Day, June 29 in 1869, several years after his arrival in the state in 1847. It was some 35 years until the building you see today was completed.
There are many stories to be told about Short’s vision and the circumstances which determined the building’s site, at the gateway to North Adelaide. There are stories to be told too about young Edward Woods’ design.
Our trained tour guides will point out items of interest, such as the unique windows, the furniture and fittings. The organ has a story of its own and an organ recital presented by Cathedral organist David Heah or another of the Cathedral music staff, precedes the Saturday tour.
