Camels waiting for freight from train (State Library of South Australia)

Opening up the Outback

Railways opened up the outback. Access to travel distances became available and affordable to pastoralists, miners, drovers and families. Transportation of freight using the extensive network of railways helped to scaffold the colony’s economy. Experience the romance and adventure of train travel, winding through the Flinders Ranges in heritage carriages being hauled by steam locomotives. Enjoy. Relax. Appreciate…and imagine life from another time.
