Learn About Peramangk Culture

The Mount Barker Community Library invites you to join us as Peramangk elder Ivan Copley shares the story of the traditional custodians of the Adelaide Hills . The Peramangk lived in the strip of country running north from Mount Barker through Harrogate, Gumeracha, Mount Pleasant and Springton to the Angaston district and south to Strathalbyn. They ‘wrote’ the first thousand chapters as they cared for country, whilst living, trading and meeting for ceremonies with the neighbouring Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna peoples. The Peramangk traded ochre, flint, quartz, supple whip-stick, mallee spears, possum skins and other items not found on the plains and lower lakes. We respect their spiritual relationship with their country and their cultural beliefs which are still important today.
