Horta Culture: Greeks and Their Greens

Launch: Saturday 6 May 2023 at 2 pm by Mayor Michael Coxon.

A vibrant exhibition and insight into the health and medicinal properties of wild greens, known in the Greek tradition as ‘Horta’. Foraging for food is something Greeks have done since ancient times. Generally perceived as weeds, ‘Horta’ are abundant with nutritional and healing properties. In the absence of food during times of war and famine, they even enabled many communities to survive and ward off starvation. Containing high levels of vitamins, minerals and rich in antioxidants, Horta are featured in many different dishes, and are now considered a unique and essential component of the Mediterranean diet.
