George S Hutton’s Photographic Memories 1924 to 1984

When Wakefield Press (with the assistance of a grant from the History Trust of South Australia) published A Photographic Memory: George S Hutton’s Port Adelaide and Surrounds 1924-1994 in 2019, many people were inspired to share their stories with the author. Some had wedding or portrait photographs taken by George. Others had found photographs in their parents’ belongings not knowing who the subjects were. Images were found of places unknown, perhaps long gone.

We hope visitors will fill in blank spaces in this photographic memory exhibition and enjoy a wonderful nostalgic tour of well known and loved places in the Port area. Semaphore Beach in 1924 and 1950 was filled with people escaping the heat. Port Adelaide had ships moored from all over the world. Such a busy bustling place which George captured through his camera lens.

Check the library website for details of the story behind the book.
