Dr Anne Black will speak about George Isaacs, alias ‘A Pendragon’, a complex colonial character. In a life that spanned two hemispheres and two colonies, this Jewish immigrant engaged in diverse occupations and passions. In Australia, he visited the goldfields, co-founded Gawler’s Humbug Society, prompted a national song, wrote the first novel published in South Australia and was the author of a play recognised as Australia’s first science fiction. This ‘thorough Bohemian’ was also imprisoned, impoverished and suffered great personal misfortune. Isaacs’ intriguing story is captured in Dr Black’s new biography Pendragon: A Life of George Isaacs. Bookings required by phone or email.
